The Kellerwald Forest

The natural reserve and nationalpark Kellerwald-Edersee is located in the middle of North Hesse among broad beech forests. Recently these woods became part of the UNESCO natural heritage. Next to the high amount of beech woods, the surrounding landscape includes gnarled oaks, flower meadows, fields and little villages.

An early enhabitation by human is still identifiable by tumuli, ringforts and ruins of churches and castles. The name of the forest arose in the 17th century, when it intensely got used for charcoal burning („Köhlerei“). In the course of time, the name Köhlerwald became Kellerwald („Cellar forest“).

During the last years, the region Kellerwald developed to be a demanded trip and vacation target. You can find much information at the homepage of the nationalpark at www.nationalpark-kellerwald-edersee.de and on www.kellerwald.de.
